Electrical Engineering is part of our daily routine. It is characterized by efficient lighting designs, ranging from localized lighting for commercial buildings, open-plan lighting designs and custom lighting for any untraditional schemes.

The electrical branch of engineering also includes the distribution of power in a building. Power circuits are split into separate circuits according to their use and location. Each circuit is protected by circuit breakers, which, together with all other switchgear, form the heart of any distribution system.

In many large industries having a large reactive load, power factor exceeds the Enemalta limit and thus a power factor correction unit is designed to achieve a near unity power factor.

Lightning risk assessments are carried out by the warranted engineer to determine whether or not a lightning protection system is plausible. In such a case, the design stage is carried out in accordance to the report’s results and the system is supervised until the commissioning stage.

Our engineers have designed all types of HVAC technologies according to location restrictions and clients’ preferences.

Despite the fact that Malta has hot, dry summers, and very mild winters, demand for heating system is constantly increasing. In many modern luxury homes, underfloor heating is considered a necessity, while heat pumps are being considered as a more efficient alternative for heating water in domestic and industrial buildings. In hotels and other industries, boilers were designed to heat the large amount of water needed on a daily basis.

Ventilation systems are introduced in commercial and industrial sites to dispose of stole, still air. The principal approach is the design at extractor fans which transfers air from a building’s interior to its exterior through the use of ducts. Air handling units equipped with heat or better, energy recovery units are being designed to extract air out of the building while at the same time input fresh and treated air at much lower energy cost.

The design of air conditioning is mainly divided into three systems. Split units are designed in segregated sites, for example offices, where the settings of an AC, are to be controlled only by the office occupant. Variable Refrigerant Flow outdoor units are designed to supply an open space consisting of multiple fan coil units with the required air-conditioning levels. Dehumidification is essential due to our humid climate. Such systems are designed when off-the-shaft solutions are non-existent or non-variable.

Several refrigeration projects were undertaken by the company. These include the design of the refrigeration cabinets for many renowned supermarkets on our islands. Our engineers have also designed central refrigerating systems, cold rooms and cold stores whose temperatures range between -25oC and 18oC. Blast freezers with temperatures as low as -40oC have been designed and certified for major catering establishments.


b.Nel is skilled in all phases of a project, starting at the design and budget estimate stage and ending at the complete commissioning of the project. Unconventional designs are a norm. Our company includes custom designs to our clients’ satisfaction. Such designs include the specification of Zone 2 explosion proof equipment and the design of frequency converters to allow aircraft maintenance equipment to operate at 400Hz.

The Budget Estimate stage is the stage in which preliminary designs are carried out and an estimate of the project’s overall cost is calculated. This is given to the client who determines whether the project is within budget and what changes should be made for the project to be a final success.

Our company is also recognized by many of our clients as an exceptional quantity surveyor. Upon completion of a project, we are requested to carry out all Mechanical and Electrical measurement and quantifications so as to construct all necessary documentation, including bills of quantities, in which pre-determined rates of quantities are inserted.

b.Nel also employs site supervisors and project managers. Their main task is to oversee that the construction of a site is processing as planned. Site supervision also includes the presence of our company at the specified location and thus the possibility for the client or any of his contractors to ask any questions concerning design and implementation. Site supervision also provides an excellent means of communication between the designing engineers and the project development.

By the use of thermal sensing equipment, our engineers observe the difference in temperature ranges of equipment. This may indicate a weak point in a system which is being overheated. Technical actions are then executed which often avoid consequential failures.

Our engineers are also skilled in carrying out measurements of a site’s Power Quality. In such an exercise, we can measure a system’s harmonics, flicker and the change in the grid’s frequency and voltage. These provide excellent statistical results, by means of which we can liaise with authorities and with the electricity provider when such issues arise.

Energy Auditing is increasingly gaining reputation both in the European Union and on our islands. Our company is qualified both as an Assessor of Dwellings and as an Assessor of Commercial Building. A building’s energy content is assessed and the building is then categorized depending on the results of the engineer’s report. A site’s energy content includes, but is not limited to:

BMS Design

For the past 10 years, b.Nel has been experimenting in building management system and can now be named as one of the experts of designing such a system. A BMS is designed with the aim of improving the quality of life of a building’s occupants; while at the same time reduce the consumption of energy. A BMS design entails of the resourceful combination of sensors, software and output devices to achieve the required outcome.
